Writing and publishing my very first poetry book, “I Am More Than the Color of My Skin” was a long process for me. At times I wanted to pull my hair out trying to figure out the formatting and publishing process. But I did it and I am grateful for the experience. My first poetry book is finally ready! I am VERY proud of this collection of poems, and I hope that you enjoy reading each one.
This poetry book was created, and these poems were written because sometimes the words just need to be said, the unheard need to be heard, the pain and anger need to be released. Holding things in can do more damage than letting them out. This poetry book and these poems are me letting it all out. It’s my “exhale.”
A lot of thought went into writing each poem. My hope is that reading my poetry will have a positive impact and really make you think. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, but sometimes seeing something in writing can make you go, “Hmmm, this is spot-on!” That’s what I hope this collection of poems does for you. I want it to have a positive impact and to really make you think.
So many things are happening in society today, and we have gotten away from celebrating and accepting our differences. So much damage has been done. In some ways, we have become desensitized to all that has happened because it is constant; and we should never be desensitized to things that have happened. These poems are raw and honest. There is anger and hurt and truth, there is love and, in the end, there is hope. I hope that when you read this collection of poems it ignites a spark that lights the way towards love and healing. Ultimately, this book and these poems are about awareness, growth and transformation.
As a final reminder, please remember, all lives can’t matter until ALL LIVES TRULY MATTER.
